I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Warbirds over Wanaka airshow this year as part of a media trip I went on. I had never actually been to a full fledged airshow before (I have seen the Blue Angels perform flyovers at various MLB games and NFL football games) and I must say watching all those planes flying in formation and performing stunts and acrobatics took me back to my childhood dreams of being a pilot.
Probably the highlight of the whole weekend for me was seeing the classic WWI biplanes and triplanes still flying. What must have it been like to be those first fighter pilots not only getting into dogfights with other pilots, but basically testing out such new technology and developing a totally new way of fighting a war.
I also have to admit that just hearing the modern jets engines roaring and rocketing past the grandstands live was very impressive as well, but more expected since that type of flying has been featured in so many TV shows and Hollywood movies, it was not as moving as seeing the classic planes flying.
